South Australia – Piccaninnie Ponds
Welcome to Piccaninnie — not really a kite spot, but a place that makes you pause. Tucked right near the Vic-SA border, this one’s all about glassy freshwater springs, limestone caverns, and some of the clearest water you’ll ever see. It’s world-famous for cave diving — not for kites.
But... there is a beach nearby. South-facing, wide, exposed — and when a northerly blows through hard enough, there’s a chance to throw a kite in the air and have a session. Conditions are rough and raw. Expect rips, troughs, and waves breaking on outer sandbars. You’d need your head switched on and a solid backup plan.
No setup space, no safety crew, no crowd — just wild southern coast and the kind of surf that doesn’t care if you know what you’re doing.
This one’s not recommended unless you’re desperate or fully prepared. The real magic here is beneath the surface — grab a snorkel and float over the alien world in the ponds. And if you’re chasing wind, better spots aren’t far — Southend, Beachport, or even back toward Warrnambool.
Verdict? Leave the kite in the van, soak in the stillness, and respect the vibe.
