South Australia – Pelican Point (Limestone Coast)

Welcome to Pelican Point — not the riverbend in WA, but a wind-blasted corner of the Limestone Coast where reef lines hold back the sea and the Southern Ocean breathes salt into your bones.

On a strong SE to S wind, this place lights up. Outer reefs break the swell offshore, leaving calm, glassy water closer in and fun little reformers peeling out wide. It’s a split-level setup — butter inside, kickers further out — if you’ve got the experience and the timing.

There’s grassy space to rig, but the beach is all shell grit, reef chips, and cold southern bite. Booties are essential — not just for the terrain, but for keeping feeling in your toes when the chill cuts through everything.

Rip currents run hard through the gaps in the reef, especially on tide turns. There are no signs, no flags, no one watching. If you’re not confident with self-rescue, don’t go alone. It’s wild. That’s the draw.

And the locals? Rough around the edges, sure — but warm once you’re in. The kind of crew who’ll give you a nod, a beer, or a hand if you need one. Friendly — unlike the water, which stays cold year-round and doesn’t care who you are.

Pelican Point is unestablished, unfiltered, and totally worth it. If you like your sessions raw and your winds unshared, this one’s yours to discover.
