South Australia – Coorong Lookout

Welcome to the long, sweeping spine of the Coorong — a place where saltwater lagoons stretch into the horizon and the dunes roll like time itself. Perched above it all is the Coorong Lookout near the River mouth, more of a great vantage point than you can walk down to the launch site.

The true magic happens below — down on the beach or across the spit where the Southern Ocean lays out a canvas of shifting sandbars, punchy shore breaks, and wide-open space. Winds here tend to funnel from SE to SW, clean and relentless during the warmer months. It’s remote, raw, and rewards those who read the land and tides well.

Access to the main beaches takes a bit of effort — think 4WD tracks, soft sand, and planning your tides right. Incoming tide can create wide, rideable lagoons; outgoing leaves hardpack and mirror-flat patches if you hit it just right. Keep your eyes open for birdlife and avoid nesting zones.
