- Wind: NE to ENE ideal (offshore-glassy); E to SE also works
- Season: Spring to Autumn, varies with wind patterns
- Water: Smooth with clean lines in NE, choppy on westerlies
- Skill: Confident intermediate and up — offshore awareness needed
- Ideal Tide: Mid to low — high tide limits setup space
- Launch Space: Sand spit near the mouth, watch for mud at low
- Hazards: Offshore wind, gusts on south, sea lions, mudpack risk
South Australia – Baird Bay (The Mouth)
Welcome to the wild window where Baird Bay exhales — a quiet little fishing town turns into a secret kiting gem as the bay opens out to sea. Here at the mouth, things get a little more raw, a little more real — and if you catch it right, a little bit magic.
On a NE to ENE, the wind funnels in like it’s been personally invited — clean, steady, and offshore enough to smooth the water while still giving you room to play safe. This is the golden direction: glassy edges, unbroken lines, and room to stretch out. E to SE still works — a touch more offshore, so stay sharp and be ready to edge hard if you're alone.
South winds? Gusty. The dunes along the southern flank shear the wind and throw little tantrums across the water. And westerlies? While technically onshore, the swell doesn’t make it in — just a bit of wind chop and a pushier ride. It’s doable, just not dreamy.
The real locals here are the sea lions — often gliding past like they’re judging your form. Be respectful, they’ve been here longer than we have.
Launch from the sand just inside the spit at mid to low tide. And watch the time — if you miss the tide, you’ll be packing down in shin-deep mud with sea lions laughing at you from the rocks.
