Victoria – Bells Beach
Welcome to Bells — not just for surfers. When the swell’s up and the wind’s honking, the lineup clears, the photographers scatter, and the wind crew roll in with quiet confidence and 9m kites.
This place isn’t a regular kite spot — it’s a mission. But when it’s massive, windy, and blown out for surf, Bells becomes the domain of those with serious skills and zero fear. Windsurfers like Jason Polakow, and kiter James Carow have torn this place apart in storm swell, carving through monsters most won’t even paddle out in. And local kiters? They launch, drop into freight-train rights, and send it over sets big enough to hide windsurf masts behind — true scenes from the cliff.
You won’t rig on the main beach — most launch from Torquay or Point Danger, setting up for full-gas downwinders past Bells, with a mate running van support along the cliffs just in case. This is not a learner’s playground. There’s no margin for error and nowhere to wash up if it goes wrong.
But when it’s on? It’s legendary. No surfer stink-eye — they’re off chasing cleaner lines elsewhere. At Bells, on the wildest days, it’s just you, the wind, and waves that feel like they’ve been building since Antarctica.
Madness? Maybe. Magic? Absolutely.
