Western Australia – Dunes Beach (Exmouth)

Welcome to Dunes — Exmouth’s exposed, sandblasted stretch where the desert bleeds into reef-lined ocean and the wind doesn’t care about your plans. This place is raw. No filters, no fanfare — just you, the elements, and the occasional boost into orbit.

Known by the locals as Surfers Beach, Dunes is technically more about waves — but when the seabreeze kicks in (and it will), kiters in the know hit the southern end. From October to March, the afternoon SSWs push through hard, clean, and cross-shore — ideal for down-the-line riding and big open water play.

It’s not for first-timers. You’re launching from soft sand with shorebreak, and you’re riding on reef edges that don’t say sorry if you come in hot. That said, when it lines up, it’s absolute magic — turquoise water, peeling swell, and wind that lets you ride until your legs beg for mercy.

No facilities to speak of. No café, no rigging mat, no one asking you to sign a waiver. Just a lookout up top, a toilet if you’re lucky, and the rest is wilderness. Bring what you need, take what you brought, and don’t expect help if it all goes pear-shaped.

But if you’re ready for it? Dunes will serve up a session that feels like it’s just for you.
