Victoria – Marengo – Apollo Bay
Welcome to Marengo — just a few minutes west of Apollo Bay, this little pocket serves up a reef-protected playground that’s smooth inside and rowdy out the back, depending on the day.
Thanks to Marengo Reef Marine Sanctuary just offshore, the inner waters stay calmer than most spots on this stretch. That outer reef takes the sting out of the swell, making this a great option for intermediate riders chasing a more mellow session or wanting to escape the heavier surf at Apollo Bay proper.
Best in SE to S winds, with the reef acting as a barrier while still letting wind funnel in clean over the back. Low tide can expose reef chunks, so mid to high tide is safest. Flatish inside, soft rolling waves further out — nice mix if you’re looking to freeride, cruise, or try some small kicker play.
Launch is easy — plenty of sand, decent parking nearby, and you’re close to town if anything’s missing. Just steer clear of sanctuary boundaries and check conditions before heading too far off the beach.
Marengo isn’t about big moves — it’s about clean lines, relaxed sessions, and getting out without the hassle. A good one to have in your back pocket when the other spots are too full-on.
