Western Australia – Free Beach (Port Denison)

Welcome to Free Beach — the local stomping ground in Port Denison where the seabreeze kicks in strong, the sand gets in everything, and the sessions feel like they stretch on forever.

This place has roots. It’s been the heart of the local kite scene for years, even hosting Kitestock — WA’s old-school kite festival that saw riders from all over rock up, camp out, and go hard all weekend. The event might’ve mellowed, but the wind sure hasn’t.

From November to March, the southerly shows up like clockwork. Cross-on, clean, and often cranking by early arvo. Inside the sandbars stays relatively flat — perfect for cruising, learning tricks, or just throwing a lazy loop. Outside, you’ll get small waves and kickers if you're chasing a bit of air.

You can literally drive your 2WD onto the beach, rig up near the Sea Folk Café, and launch straight into it. Just keep clear of beach walkers, dogs, and other kiters — especially on busy weekends.

Great for intermediate riders and above, but beginners can hold their own here too if the swell’s down and the tide’s friendly. Like any beach spot, read it before you ride it.

Port Denison’s chilled. The kind of place where the wind does the talking and the community backs you up. Free Beach isn’t flashy — it’s just reliable, fun, and full of good energy when it’s blowing.
