Victoria – Point Lonsdale
Welcome to Point Lonsdale — dramatic, wind-lashed, and perched at the edge of The Rip, where Bass Strait funnels into Port Phillip Bay. It’s scenic, exposed, and definitely not your average kite spot.
While it's tempting, this is not a recommended location for kitesurfing or winging. The area is dominated by dangerous tidal flow, powerful backwash, and shifting currents thanks to its position near the Heads. Add to that steep beach gradients, sudden shore dump, and active surf zones — and it quickly becomes clear this one's better left for the surfers or land-based wind worship.
Wind-wise, it sees strong SW to SE systems off Bass Strait and can occasionally catch a NE in the right setup — but clean, kiteable windows are rare and risky. Any attempt to ride here should only be made by advanced riders who are highly familiar with the local conditions and hazards — including the nearby shipping channel and restricted marine park zones.
There’s good parking up near the lighthouse, and it’s a fantastic spot for watching the ocean flex its muscle — but if you’re looking to launch a kite, you’re far better off heading to Swan Bay, Ocean Grove, or 13th Beach.
Point Lonsdale is best enjoyed with both feet on the ground — unless you’re in a boat or a wetsuit with a surfboard. Respect it. It’s beautiful, but brutal.
