South Australia – Port MacDonnell

Welcome to Port MacDonnell — South Australia’s southernmost town, where the wild Southern Ocean meets reefy breaks and steady wind. It’s one of those underrated gems that quietly serves up solid sessions for those willing to make the trip.

Best on southwest to southeast winds, especially in summer when the seabreeze kicks in clean. You’re looking at 15–25 knots on a typical good day, with options for both flatwater inside the harbour walls and rolling swell out front.

The main launch is near the breakwater — easy gradient, good space, but can get gusty when the wind funnels. Inside the harbour, it’s more protected and smoother — ideal for freestyle or foil play. Outside is a different beast, with reefy sections and punchy swell — advanced riders only.

Parking’s easy, there are toilets and town supplies nearby, and the fish and chips are worth the post-session wait. Just steer clear of the boat ramp and respect working water traffic.

Port Mac might be off most people’s radar, but that’s part of the charm — wind, water, and space to ride how you want.
