Western Australia – Gnaraloo Homestead

Welcome to Gnaraloo — where the desert meets the reef and the wind doesn’t just blow... it rips. Remote, raw, and legendary, this is a proper off-grid kite spot for riders who like their sessions wild and unforgettable.

Sitting north of Carnarvon and skimming the edge of the Ningaloo Reef, Gnaraloo Homestead offers access to long reef breaks, butter flats behind the coral, and open ocean power when the wind's on. And when it’s on — it’s on. From October through May, the SW to SSW trades crank in across the flats by mid-morning and howl through the arvo.

Launch from the beach near Tombstones for wave riding (if you know what you're doing), or cruise further inside the lagoon for safer, flatter water. The tide range is big — low tide reveals razor-sharp coral and dry patches, so time it right or you’ll be walking home with reef tattoos.

This is not a beginner spot. The reef is unforgiving, the wind is often strong, and help is hours away. You need your gear sorted, your skills dialed, and your respect for the ocean fully intact.

No shops. No phone reception. No easy outs. Just you, the wind, and maybe a goat or two. Stay at the homestead or camp — solar showers, dirt tracks, and sunsets that’ll make you forget what day it is.

Gnaraloo’s a mission. But if you're chasing that session — the one that sticks with you for life — this is where it happens.
