Victoria – Port Melbourne

Welcome to Port Melbourne — where the skyline’s at your back, the breeze rolls up the bay, and the Spirit of Tasmania hums past while you sneak in a session before sundown. It’s a city-side go-to for kiters who want convenience without completely sacrificing ride quality. \

Works best on a southerly to southwesterly, especially in summer when the seabreeze fills in. Expect 10–20 knots, smooth enough for foiling and freestyle, with just a hint of city gustiness.

Flat to lightly choppy water, easy beach gradient, and good rigging space, but keep your distance from flagged swimming areas — these zones are off-limits for kiting. Always launch and land away from swimmers and stay 50m clear of people and structures, as per Port Phillip’s shared wind sport rules.

Keep an eye out for shipping lanes and ferry routes too — they don’t stop, and you won’t win.

For a metro session, Port Melbourne delivers. Not epic, but close, consistent, and worth it when the wind’s up and you’ve only got a couple hours to ride.
