Wedge Island – Western Australia
Welcome to Wedge — not the island up north, but the rough-and-ready beach town two hours north of Perth, where 4WDs rule, and the wind writes the rules. Wedge is one of those WA classics: wild, remote, and absolutely epic when it turns on.
In summer, the seabreeze rolls in cross to cross-on from the south-west, often nuking in the arvo and wrapping beautifully along the beach and dunes. There’s something for everyone — flatwater patches between the inner sandbars, playful kickers out the back, and that endless horizon that makes you feel like you’ve found the edge of the map.
Tide’s not too picky here — low tide brings a bit more shape and bounce to the waves, but just keep an eye on submerged rocks near shore. It’s mostly intermediate and up — not so much because it’s technical, but because if things go wrong, it’s a mission to sort out.
4WD access only, and make sure you deflate a bit or risk digging in. The camp scene’s pretty loose, so bring your sense of humour, plenty of water, and leave the ego at home — Wedge will humble you real quick.
